Dr. Crawford is an advocate for the beauty of the night sky.
He has a Ph.D. in Astronomy from University of Chicago (1958).
He is an emeritus Astronomer at National Optical Astronomy Observatories/Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson, Arizona and co-founder of the IDA (International Dark Sky Association) where he serves as the Volunteer Executive Director.
He is an Honorary Member of Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
He is Co-founder and President of the Board of Directors of GNAT, Inc. (Global Network of Astronomical Telescopes): a tax-exempt, non-profit organization who goals are to develop a global network of small telescopes and to be a catalyst for all those interested in or doing research and education with small telescopes.
His experience with night sky preservation includes: Chair of the American Astronomical Society’s committee on Light Pollution, Radio Interference, and Space Debris; the IESNA Committees on Light Trespass and Outdoor Environmental Lightning; the Southern Arizona Section of the IES; the Tucson/Pima County Outdoor Lighting Code Committee; Commission 50 – Identification and Protection of Observatory Sites; and Commission 25 – Astronomical Photometry.
Dr. Crawford joined Robert Dick in Toronto for filming.
