Beings Of Light

Humans evolved under the full spectrum of sunlight and the natural cycle of light and dark.

In the early 1900’s the average nightly sleep was 9 1/2 hours; at the beginning of the 21st century, we’re lucky to get 7 1/2… anytime. Since Edison popularised the electric light bulb, we’ve been busy refining life in the electric fast lane.

And that means, we’ve stepped away from the Sun’s cycle of light and dark. Victoria Glendinning, author of the novel  ‘Electricity’ and Edward Tenner, author of ‘Why Things Bite Back’ look at how electricity has changed just about everything.

International dark sky advocates Robert Dick and Dr. David Crawford chase the last natural landscape left in our cities -- the night sky.

In Beings of Light, we discover that darkness is one half of the equation to good health. Dr. George Brainard tells us that the eye has two senses -- one for navigating the world but another for regulating biology.

And that’s changing everything from architecture to law. Dr. Raymond Lam discusses how light combats seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Like plants involuntarily drawn to sunlight, we respond to light in a staggeringly complex chemical, physiological and emotional synergy. We humans are light eaters.

Artist Peter Erskine has built a giant rainbow inside a Southern California mall and says that the rainbow is part of our cellular memory.

In one of the hottest fields of frontier science, Dr. Fritz-Albert Popp informs us that our cells communicate via little particles of light called bio-photons and light reflects our body’s state of health.

Sick people give off different colours and intensities of light than healthy people. He believes light is not only the regulator and indicator of good health but it just might be the medicine of the future.

The energy of sunlight forged the very simplest, earliest, single cells on Earth, and we evolved from those cells complete with their energy pathways.

If sunlight is the catalyst for life: light is the metaphor for life... we are truly Beings of Light.
